These vibrant creatures are copper-engraved prints dating from 1657 by the Swiss born Matthaus Merian. The colouring was done at a later date. They feature a mixture of scientific observations and embellishments. Included are the spiny lobster, puffer fish, eels and flying gurnard among so many other exotic species. It's a feast for the eyes and with their vibrant colouring, the series would suit a dark wall, a bathroom or a house by the sea!
In order to preserve the quality and feel of the original engravings we have used by museum archivists for scanning and are publishing a limited print run on Canson art paper. The only adjustments made to the original were removing age stains and increasing the size. No compositional or colour changes were made.
